A Scandal in the Sherlock Holmes Canon?
This particular story gets so much attention and is probably the one story where fans most likely part and go different ways. For some reason if you think of Sherlock Holmes you think of Irene Adler just as quickly as of Moriarty. This woman has appeared in only one story and still is so dominantly in our minds when we read the others. There are so many other women in the stories, some I consider to be even cleverer as Irene, but they are simply forgotten. I guess it is two things that make us remember Irene so clearly.
For one it is the lack of her actual appearance and description in the story. Similar to Moriarty she is mentioned but never really shown and therefore our imagination carries us away. We give her meaning because she is hardly described, mysterious and hard to catch (in not the way you catch a ball when its thrown at you... but the way it looks and flies and behaves. xD )
